After our artistic and touristic adventures in Nice and Monaco, we headed back across the Italian border to the Eco-village, Torri Superiore. The tiny village, really more of a medieval appartment complex, is believed to date from the 13th century. It was built to be easilly defended from attack as the whole area was constantly threatened by pirates, saracens, the Genoese, etc... Two small doorways lead to a maze of small tunnels and stairways which give access to the 'houses.' The village was abandoned over the last century until, in the early 90s it was bought by a group of eco-villagers. There are about 30 in the association, 20 or so who live on site. 14 residential units have been restored and they give courses and seminars in permaculture and sustainable living and they also do a thriving bed and breakfast business.
We signed on to work half days and paid a reduced rate for our room and board. The food was great, mostly grown on site or locally, and the place was very quiet and restful. We happened to be there during the olive harvest so we learned more than we needed to know about the olive harvesting process. Actually, the work was not hard and we all enjoyed the chance to relax, read and chat with the 'villagers' and other guests in the afternoon and evening.
